Fishing Spots in the West Country

Abraham Lake – Cutts, Brookies, and Rockies to 2 lbs., Bull Trout to 12, a few Rainbows and Lake Trout. Laker coloration very similar to Bulls so look closely to tell them apart. Fishing best at mouth of N. Sask., Cline, Tershishner. Best from Aug. to freeze up. Use caution when boating due to submerged rock ledges, violent winds. Fish near shore. Located along highway 11 about 25 km west of Nordegg. Bait ban on lake and tributaries.
Alford Creek – Browns to 4 lbs., Brookies to 1, Rockies to 2. Located 10 km west of Caroline on Hwy 54. Joins Clearwater on the west, about 6.5 km upstream from the bridge. Open all year. Catch and release September 1 to March 32.

Alford Lake – Rainbows to 1 lb. Stocked annually. Travel about 25 km west of Caroline via Hwy 54 and 591, then North. Watch for sing Campground at Tay River. Electric motors only.

Allstones Lake - Brookies stocked every 3 years. Small high mountain lake. 10 km trail begins where Hwy 11 crosses Allstones Cr. At Abraham Lake about 35 km west on Nordegg. Trout Limit: 2.

Baptiste River – Brookies to 1 lb. Bull trout to 5, Rockies to 2, Pike some browns. Travel 32 km west from Rocky Mountain House on Hwy 11, then 10 km north on Sunchild Reserve Road. Fish upstream of reserve. Open Apr 1 to Oct 31; fish may be kept during this time, but only from the river.

Baseline Creek – Brookies small but plentiful. Turn south of Hwy 752 at Strachan south of Rocky Mountain House, take first road south after long bend in the road(4 km south of Stachan and just before crossing center fork of Prairie Creek) the 6 or 7 km south of where Baseline joins Vetch to form south fork of Prairie Creek.

Bighorn River – Browns, Cutts and Rockies to 2 lbs. Bull trout to 5 below Crescent Falls; Cutts only above the falls. North Sask. Tributary. Crossed by Hwy 11 about 24 km west of Nordegg. Campground day use sites at falls. Cutt 12” minimum size limit abouve the falls.

Birch Lake – Brookies to 2 lbs; Stocked every 2 years; Travel 3 km west of Caroline on Hwy 54 to Burnstick lake turnoff(watch for sign) then 12 km south to oil road that heads west to within 100 meters of lake.

Blackstone River – Bull Trout to 5 lbs., Cutts and Rockies to 2. Crossed by Trunk Road about 22 km north of Nordegg. Road parallels river for about 10 km, crosses where Chungo Cr. Enters. Campground at Beaver Flats on Chungo Road.

Brewster Creek – Brookies, Rockies, Pike. Browns stocked in beaver dam. Joins Baptiste at south boundary of Sunchild Reserve NW of RMH.

Brown Creek – Cutts and Brookies to 1 lb. Bull Trout to 4, Rockies to 2. Blackstone tributary. Crossed by Trunk Road about 35 km north of Nordegg Campground. Blackstone catch and release regs apply.

Burnstick Lake – Pike to 5 lbs, Perch to 1lb. Walleye maybe a few browns. Located south and west of Caroline. Municipal Campground at east end. Walleye 0 limit and perch is 5.

Chamber Creek – Browns to 3 lbs, Brookies and Rockies to 1. Pike to 12 in lower reaches only. Browns last stocked in beaver dams in 1995. Crossed by Hwy 11 about 32 kms west of RMH. Campground 1km west of bridge.

Chungo Creek – Cutts and Rockies to 2 lbs, Bull Trout to 3, Brookies to 1. blackstone tributary. Crossed by Trunk Road about 32 km North of Nordegg. Campground. Blackstone catch and release regulations apply.

Clearwater River – Browns and Rockies to 2 lbs; Brookies to 1. Bull Trout to 6; Pike to 10 in lower reaches only. Enters N. Sask. At Rocky Mountain House. Crossed by Hwy 54 about 7 km west of Caroline, by Hwy 22 about 16 km south of RMH and parallel by Why 591 and Trunk Road for another 60 km upstream.

Cline River – Brookies to 1 lb, Bull Trout to 4, Rockies to 2; Cutts to 2 in the middle and upper section to Huntington Cr. Crossed by Hwy 11 about 50 km west of Nordegg. Enters Abraham Lake, best fished upstream abouve canyon, about 2 hr hike from hwy. Cutt 12” minimum size limit.

Colt Creek – Brookies, Bull Trout. Upper Nordegg Tributary. Travel about 13 km north of Highway 11 on Harlech Road(which leaves hwy 11 at Shunda creek Campground) then west on the oil roads.

Coral Lake – Golden trout. Self reproducing population. First stocked in 1977. Located near headwaters of Coral Cr. North of Cline River. Long tough hike up Coral Cr. Valley, many creek crossings. Trailhead where hwy 11 crosses Cline about 50 km west of Nordegg. Trout limit 1 over 16” bait ban, closure.

Cow Creek – Browns to 4 lbs. Crossed by #752 about 16 km soth of RMH just south of Cow Lake store. Lower creek reached by good road west and north of the store. Campground on Prairie Cr. West of Strachan.

Cow Lake – Perch, some good sizes. Several hundred brood rainbows form 5 to 10 lbs. Stocked in spring when available. Located on Hwy 752, about 15 km south of RMH. Campground and boat launch on the west end.

Cripple Creek – Cutts to 1 lb. Major N Ram spawning tributary. Crossed by Trunk Road 42 km south of Nordegg. Campground at Ram Falls. North Ram catch and release regs apply.

Cutoff Creek – Browns to 2 lbs., Bull trout. Joins Clearwater south of 591 about 30 km west of Tay River bridge. Travel SW on road that leaves Trunk Road at east end of Seven Mile Flats just downstream of Seven Mile Cr. Bridge.

Dry Creek – Brookies, Bull Trout, Rockies Small Creek that joins Lick Cr. 2 km upstream of where Lick meets Prairie Creek. Access appears to be by seismic and bush trails only. Located about 6 km north of junction of Strachan plant road and Hwy 752 west of Strachan.

Fall Creek – Cutts, Bull Trout, Rockies below falls; Cutts above. Ram tributary. Travel about 55 km SW of Rocky on Hwy 752 to Baseline Forestry Cabin, then 10 km NW on Trout Cr. Road Lower ram regs apply; Cutts under 14” & Rockies under 12” must be released. Bull Trout limit 0.

Gap Lake – Brookies to 4 lbs. Stocked every 5 years. Good Fly fishing. Ice fishing best in Dec. Take hwy 752 SW of Rocky to Prairie Cr. Campground, then 55 km NW. Access via witner road access muskeg flat; summer access by foot or ATV. No motors allowed.

Goldeye Lake – Rainbows to 5 lbs; Stocked annually. Travel 11 km west of Nordegg on Hwy 11, then 2 km north. Campground and electric motors only.

Harlech Pond – Rainbows stocked annually. Located about 7 km east of Nordegg on Hwy 11, just south of Hwy.

Hummingbird Creek – Cutts to 1 lb. Ram tributary. Travel about 55 km south of Nordegg on Trunk Road, then 8 km west on Onion Lake Road. Campground at Ram Falls. Upper Ram regs apply.

Jackfish Lake – Pike, Walley, Perch. Outlet creek has brookies. Small lake adjacent to Hwy 11 about 60 km west of RMH. Campground. Max boat speed 12 km/h. Walleye Limit 0, Perch 5.

Lake of Falls – Cutts, Bull Trout. Trailhead where Hwy 11 crosses Cline about 50 km west of Nordegg. Tough 20 km hike. Cutt limit 2, Bull Trout 0, bait ban, closure. Cutt 12” minimum-size limit in outlet and tributaries.

Landslide Lake – Cutts to 2 lbs, Stocked every 2 years. About a 15 km hike up Cline R and Entry Cr from trailhead on Hwy 11 about 50 km west of Nordegg. Limit 2 Trout.

Limestone Creek – Bull Trout, Rockies, Enters Clearwater from South about 60 km SW of Ricinus on hwy 591, just south of Corkscrew Mountain.

Lookout Creek – Cutts, Brookies, Bull Trout, Rockies. Blackstone Tributary. Crossed by Chungo Road about 14 km upstream of junction with Trunk Road north of Nordegg. Parallels Chungo Road for several km before joining Blackstone at Beaver Flats campground. Blackstone catch and release applies.

Medicine Lake – Pike, Perch, Main source of Medicine River. Travle about 50 km north of Rocky on Alder Flats Road (Hwy 22), then east to lake. Campground on east side. Max boat speed 12 km/h. Perch limit 5.

Mitchell Lake – Rainbows to 1 lb. Stocked annually. Travel about 50 km west of Sylvan Lake on Hwy 11 to junction with Hwy 22, then 10 km south and 10 km west. Road to lake turns left across rocky pasture. Day use site. Electric motors only.

Nice and Easy Creek – Cutts, N. Rame tributary. Travel about 25 km south of Rocky Mountain House on 752 to Prairie Cr. Campground west of Strachan, then about 75 km on North Fork Prairie Cr. Road to N. Ram. Creek joins here. North ram catch and release regs apply.

Nordegg Ponds (East and West) – Rainbows stocked annually. Located about 3 km (east pond) and 5 km (west pond) north of Nordegg on Trunk Road.

Nordegg River – Brookies to 1 lb. Bull trout to 5, Rockies to 2 in upper reaches; Pike, Walleye, a few big browns in lower. Travel about 32 km west of Rocky on Hwy 11 to Sunchild Reserve Road, then 40 km north. Upstream and down mostly wilderness. Open Apr 1 to Oct 31. Fish may be kept during this time, but only from the river. General rules apply.

North Ram River – Cutts to 4 lbs. Crossed by Trnk Road about 30 km south of Nordegg then N Fork Prairie Cr Road heads downstream 8 km, and tough bush road upstream several km. Campground at bridge. Catch and release * tributaries.

Obstruction Lakes – Cutts to 3 lbs. Usually stocked every 2 years; last stocked 1996 Tough 2 day hike up Coral Cr. From Cline River trailhead on North Job Lake. Lake trout limit 2, closure.

Onion Lake – Cutts to 1 lb. Joins Hummingbird Cr. About 4 km upstream of where Hummingbird joins Ram. Take Trunk Road about 55 km south of Nordegg to Onion Lake rd, then west to creek. Campground at ram Falls. Upper ram regs apply.

Peppers Lake – Brookies to 2 lbs, although 6 lb Brookie reported caught here in 1990. Stocked annually. Travel about 60 km south of Nordegg on Trunk Road, then about 6 km west. Campground, electric motors.

Phyllis Lake – rainbows stocked annually. Browns doubtful, illegally introduced Perch to 1. A few large brood Rainbows stocked regularly. Travel west of Caroline on Hwy 54, cross the Clearwater, then 6 km farther west, about 3 km north, and 2 km west. Electric motor only.

Prairie Creek (North and Center Forks) – Browns to 5 lbs. Brookies to 1, Rockies to 2. Take Hwy 752 about 22 kms south and west from Rocky to Strachan, where road crosses Prairie Creek. North and Center forks join west of Strachan. N. Fork Prairie Creek Road follows north fork; Hwy 752 follows center fork. Campgrounds 2 km and 13 km west of Strachan. Catch and Release regs apply from N fork Prairie Cr. Road downstream to Clearwater River.

Ram River South – Cutts above lower falls(downstream of where N. Ram joins); Cutts and Rockies to 3 lbs. Bull Trout to 5 below falls. Trunk Road crosses Ram about 60 km south of Nordegg. Campground at Ram Falls. Note Catch and Release applies from Ram Falls to Fall Creek. Cutt 12” minimum size limit applies from headwaters to Ram Falls.

Rocky Children’s Pond – Rainbows stocked annually. Located at outskirts of Rocky Mountain Hosue. Turn left after the bridge heading west on Hwy 11. No boats allowed, Children only.

Shunda Creek – Browns to 3 lbs. Brookies to 1, Rockies to 2. Travel west on Hwy 11 from Rocky. Highway first crosses creek about 16 km east of Nordegg at Harlech Campground. Crossed by 5 more bridges; access plentiful.. No motors allowed on pond at beaver dam day use site.

Shunda Lake – (Fish Lake) Rainbows to 4 lbs. Stocked annually. Travel 2 km west of Nordegg on Hwy 11, then 2 km SW. Campground. Electric motors only.

Strubel Lake – Rainbows to 5 lbs. Stocked annually. Travel 51 km west of Sylvan Lake on Hwy 11 to Hwy 22, then south 10 km, west 10 km and south 2 km. Day use site. Campground 2 km west of Strachan on Hwy 752. Max boat speed 12 km/h.

Swan Lake – Browns to 12 lbs, Lake trout to 10, Pike to about 15. Lakers very food quality, but numbers low. Travel about 35 km west of Caroline via Hwy 54 and 591, then 20 km north on good gravel road. Watch for sign. Campground Bait ban closure. Max boat speed 12 km/h.

Twin Lakes – Rainbows stocked annually, a few large brood rainbows stocked regularly. Travel west of Rocky 7 km on Hwy 11 and 1 km north on Crimson Lake road. Campground. Max boat speed 12 km/h.
